Medical Missionaries of Mary
The Medical
Missionaries of Mary (MMM) is a group of dedicated women who
live in the community and have consecrated their lives to serve
the poor and disadvantaged by providing much-needed medical
services. Their communities all over the world seek to
“develop a more prosperous and dignified lifestyle.”
Their healthcare work is intimately linked with the efforts of
local communities to improve not only their health, but also the
status of women, their food supply and nutrition, their water
supply, their housing, their income-generation capabilities, and
their general standard of living. In Makondo, the six
sisters and their local staff run a health center and a mobile
HIV/AIDS clinic. They are at the frontline of the HIV/AIDS
epidemic and constitute a critical lifeline for thousands of
people. Into Your Hands partners with the MMM in
Makondo to provide assistance to the most needy through our
Hands of Mercy Program.
Into Your Hands provides support for the following MMM programs:
Sr. Josephine's Orphans and Vulnerable Children Program
Into
Your Hands provides funds for orphaned, vulnerable,
and disabled children to attend local primary and secondary
schools, and receive needed interventions such as home tutoring
and nutrition supplements. Through a network of community
health workers, the Medical Missionaries of Mary are able to
identify those children most in need of assistance. This
program is entirely privately donated funds, as grant and
foundation money is earmarked for their HIV/AIDS mobile clinic,
the Makondo Health Clinic, and community health worker training
sessions.
Spotlight: Francis, Story of Hope
Francis (right) is a six year old with hydrocephaly. Despite his disability, he is a delightful and joyful child. In partnership with the Medical Missionaries of Mary, Into Your Hands is able to provide Francis with weekly home tutoring. Francis beams with pride as he recites his ABC's.
St. Kizito Nursery School
St. Kizito is one of the few nursery schools in the Makondo area.
It offers early childhood education to about 90 students
ages three through six. Sr. Celine, of the
MMM, is the direct supervisor of St. Kizito and is responsible
for the training of teachers and maintaining a high quality
environment for young children.
