St. Denis Self-Sufficiency Project

The Importance of Self-Sufficient Schools

TAMTF workshopsIn today's financial climate, it is important for rural schools in developing nations to explore ways of becoming independent of foreign sources of funding. Into Your Hands recognizes that St. Denis faces a significant risk if we were to be forced to remove our financial support of the school.  St. Denis would struggle to continue educating students and it would most likely have to close its doors. Most families simply cannot afford to send their children to school. This is the principal reason why Into Your Hands, in collaboration with Teach A Man To Fish, is looking to support the school in establishing a portfolio of income generating projects to cover the constant financial shortfall from lack of tuition payments.

The other key reason for the establishment of these projects is to provide students with an opportunity to learn practical and entrepreneurial skills relevant to their family livelihood. It is hoped that with these skills, graduates from the school will be able to succeed in raising themselves and their families out of poverty through establishing their own businesses, gaining employment or securing a place in tertiary education.
