Current Projects 2009-2010
June 2010
Great
news from Jamie Clearfield, our new St. Denis Self-Sufficiency
Project Officer in Makondo. Jamie is from the Boston area
and a graduate of Boston University. She is doing amazing
work and just replaced Christina Haberl, from Austria, as the
Project Officer. Jamie is starting a student savings
program, and has kicked off a group lending program for the St.
Denis teachers. Jamie is a great support to both the
school-based businesses and our Into Your Hands staff.
Pictured in photo are Jamie, Justine, and Christina in front of the new school store. The school store sells school supplies, food items, and personal care items.

We are so excited to launch the St. Denis Self-Sufficiency
Project in partnership with Teach A Man To Fish!
As we enter the final stages of project preparation phase, St.
Denis is busy implementing activity and financial record keeping
processes for the Cow Milk Production Business, the Matooke
Production Business, and the Community Internet and Business
Center.
Here are updates on the cow business:
Cow Milk Production
Students
have been busy planting elephant grass for the milk cows.
More elephant grass will help the cows produce more milk.
The students are also learning animal husbandry and livestock
caretaking skills as they manage the cow shelter and clear the
surrounding weeds to keep the cows free from insects that could
cause disease.
The work is supervised by Mukasa James, the Into Your Hands Uganda Project Manager, and Kawuka, the St. Denis project supervisor. Dorah, another St. Denis teacher, is the manager for the business and keeps meticulous records.
Customers are starting to become regulars as the cows begin to produce enough milk to sell the excess after feeding the calves.
We also welcome Charles, the new calf born to one of the three cows in the program. This is the second calf born in the past year. Now the count is three cows, two calves.
This is Bukenya, the calf's caretaker. Little Charles is in good hands!
