St. Denis Self-Sufficiency Projects

Cow Milk Production

cow milk productionThe Cow Milk Production business was launched in early 2010 and involves the daily production of fresh milk by an on-site dairy herd with the milk being sold from the school premises. The milk is sterilized through boiling in the school kitchen and sold to local community members. Starting in 2011, refrigerated milk will be sold at the school supplies store.

Pig Production

Pig ProductionThis business is scheduled to be launched in 2011 and will produce castrated male pigs ranging from 30-50 kg for sale to middle men or direct to ‘Pork Joints’ as well as surplus one month year old piglets. Pigs will be kept in a shed compound. Female reproducers will be served at regular intervals, giving birth to piglets once a year.  A select number of male piglets will be retained as "fatteners" for meat, while remaining piglets will be raised to one month and sold. Manure from the animals will also be sold to the school Matooke project.

Matooke Production

matooke productionMatooke is a savory plantain used as a staple crop and eaten daily in Uganda. The matooke business was launched in 2009 and serves an internal market within the school and sell fresh bunches of matooke directly to the school kitchen. Production of matooke will be continuous throughout the year but will vary in quantities produced due to differing individual maturation periods for the matooke plants in the plantation.  Once the plantation expands, the school will sell matooke to the community.

St. Denis School Supplies Store

School CanteenOur newest school business and by far the most popular!  The supplies store is located at the entrance gate of the school to allow access by members of the wider community. The  business makes school supplies and other products available. By supplying these products at the school, the money spent by students on these supplies is reinvested into their education and the students save time since they don't have to leave campus to find supplies.  Members of the community can purchase hard to find personal care products at the store.

Posho (Grain) Mill

Construction of the new grain mill started in July 2010 and is scheduled to be finished by mid-August.  Residents of the Makondo area are excited because the grain mill will provide a nearby place to mill their corn to make Posho, a staple in the local diet.  At the moment, community members have to transport their grain over long distances for this service.

Transport Hire

Transport Hire St. Bernard's College truckThis business will involve the hiring out of a large, multi-purpose haulage truck for both the moving of bulky materials and for the transport of people (subject to approval of Ordinary Transport Vehicle license). The vehicle will be kept on school premises and can be hired internally by school businesses requiring transport services, in particular the Sound System Hire business.

Sound System Hire

A Sound System for use at large public meetings, ceremonies, parties and discos will be hired to clients across Masaka district. The system will be of mid-level standard so that demand will stretch beyond the local village area.

The Sound System will be kept in a small rented unit in the local trading centre of Makondo so that it is accessible and well publicized. The Sound System will be rented out using an advance booking system and with an extra charge can be delivered to clients using the school’s haulage truck. There will a Sound System attendant hired for the purpose of managing hires 7 days a week.
